Mt
Garnet is situated approximately 46kms west of Ravenshoe on the
Kennedy Highway which is the main road through to Karumba, with
sealed roads all the way. The population is approximately 600 in
the greater area. Mt Garnet was originally a Tin Mining town and
still has one Tin Smelter still in operation. There is currently
a Zinc Mine and also a Lime Mine operating in the town itself. Most
of the surrounding areas are beef cattle properties. The township
consists of a general store, bakery, post office, service station
and a primary school.
